What are the characteristics of steel commonly used for precision gear machining?

2022-11-05

The steels commonly used for precision gear machining include quenched and tempered steel, quenched steel, carburized and quenched steel and nitrided steel. The strength of cast steel is lower than that of forged steel, and it is usually used for larger gears. The mechanical properties of gray cast iron are poor, and it can be used for light open gear transmission. Ductile cast iron can partially replace steel in precision gear processing. Gray cast iron can be used for light open gear transmission. Plastic gears need light load and low noise. Generally, steel gears with good thermal conductivity are used.

1. Medium carbon structural steel: precision gear processing enterprises use 45 steel for quenching and tempering or surface crushing. After heat treatment, the comprehensive mechanical system has good performance, but the cutting technical performance is relatively poor, and the tooth surface roughness has a greater impact. It is suitable for gears made in China with low speed and small cutting load.

2. Medium carbon alloy nano structural steel: quenched and tempered with 40cr or surface quenched. After heat treatment, the mechanical parts are better than 45 steel, and the heat treatment deformation is smaller. It is used to manufacture gears with higher speed, higher precision and greater load.

3. Carburizing steel: 20cr and 18crMnTis are used for carburizing or carburizing of precision gear materials. After carburizing and quenching, the hardness of the tooth surface can reach HRc58-63, and the core has a high toughness, which is resistant to both wear and impact. It is suitable for manufacturing gears with high speed, medium load or great impact and load. The gear structure deformation after carburizing treatment has a great impact, which needs further gear grinding to correct in time, and the cost is relatively high. The deformation degree of carbonitriding is relatively small, and the bearing capacity of the former is inferior to that of the former due to the thin carburizing layer.

4. Nitriding steel: 38crMoAIA is used for the nitriding of precision gear materials, which has little influence on deformation and can no longer grind teeth. The gear surface has high wear resistance and is suitable for manufacturing high-speed gears.

In the future, gear is developing towards heavy load, high speed, high precision and high efficiency, and strives for small size, light weight, long service life and economic reliability.
